Study highlights landfills' impact on global warming, ozone depletion

UK landfills may emit around 1,000 tonnes of CFCs and HCFCs per year, according to a study by scientists at Nottingham Trent University.1 The findings are tentative, but will focus attention on landfills as a long-term source of chemicals which are powerful greenhouse gases as well as ozone depleters. The study has also renewed concern about exposures of landfill workers to toxic substances - notably vinyl chloride - in gas emissions.
