Blue Circle's waste plans hit by BPEO assessment row

Cement manufacturer Blue Circle has withdrawn an application to burn industrial waste at its works in Weardale, County Durham, after the Environment Agency criticised its emissions monitoring and data handling practices. The move is a setback to the use of secondary liquid fuels (SLF) in cement kilns - and raises important questions over the Agency's methodology for assessing the "best practicable environmental option" (BPEO) which may have repercussions for other industries.
