Broad-spectrum pesticides blamed for declining bird populations

Farmers should move away from broad spectrum pesticides towards more targeted products and switch to organic farming, according to a Government-funded review of the indirect effects of pesticides on farmland birds. Taxes on broad-spectrum pesticides may be one way of promoting a switch to more bird-friendly products - as could the introduction of "comparative assessment", already enshrined in an EC proposal on biocides, to take more hazardous pesticides off the market as safer alternatives became available.
