Review of shellfish Directive likely to increase sewage costs

Regulations implementing the 1979 EC Directive on the quality of shellfish waters in England and Wales came into force in June.1 Pressure from the European Commission and civil claims by shellfishermen for compensation for damage caused by sewage effluents were behind the belated move. The legislation heralds a review of shellfish water designations which could require stricter standards for some coastal sewage discharges, with significant implications for water companies' investment plans.
