LCA on metal degreasing fails to settle dispute

Manufacturers of trichloroethylene, a solvent widely used in metal degreasing, are claiming it is environmentally preferable to water-based systems on the basis of a life-cycle assessment (LCA).1 However, the solvent is superior only when used in modern systems scarcely in commercial use in the UK - and the study also omitted some important issues, such as groundwater contamination from solvent spills and dioxin and other releases in manufacturing.
