Business much as usual as UK objects to landfill Directive

The new Government has assumed the mantle of the old by announcing that it intends to oppose key features of the draft EC Directive on landfills. Despite clear pre-election indications that it would take a softer line, the Government has voiced particularly strong objections to the European Commission's proposal for a phase-down in landfilling of biodegradable wastes. Its estimates of the costs involved have been strongly criticised by Friends of the Earth.
