Tough talks at ozone layer meeting on methyl bromide, HCFCs

Intensive lobbying by manufacturers and users of the ozone-depleting fungicide methyl bromide is threatening to derail attempts by developed countries to agree a faster phase-out for the chemical when Ministers meet in September to tighten global controls on ozone-depleting substances. The USA and Canada will also oppose efforts by the EC to introduce a more rapid phase-out for HCFCs, but a new licensing system to combat illegal trade in CFCs has almost unanimous support.
