Unilever flushes out fate of P&G fat substitute

Concern about the environmental fate and effects of zero-calorie fat-substitutes such as Procter & Gamble's Olestra has been raised by Unilever scientists.1 These indigestible compounds - sucrose polyesters (SPEs) - pass through the human body and may threaten soil fertility and structure when sewage sludge is spread on land.
