MAFF backs off from landfilling of animal waste

Landfilling of raw animal waste is to be severely restricted under legislation being rushed onto the statute book by the Ministry of Agriculture (MAFF). The initiative, designed to prevent a possible collapse of the rendering sector in the wake of the BSE crisis, marks a fundamental shift away from an earlier plan to promote competition between the rendering and landfill sectors.
