New curbs on HCFCs, CFCs loom from 2000

The European Commission is to propose new restrictions on ozone-depleting substances, including a ban on the use of HCFCs in all refrigeration and air conditioning (RAC) equipment by 2008, and earlier phase-outs for use in new equipment and in other applications. It is also expected to propose a ban on all CFC use from 2000, and a ban on production of the fungicide methyl bromide from 2001.
