Newspaper publishers seek alternative to recycling

A decline in the proportion of waste paper used in newsprint has led to a renewed examination by publishers of the respective merits of paper recycling and energy recovery. Publishers are showing interest in recent life-cycle analyses (LCAs) which support the case for incineration - but the debate appears dangerously academic given that most waste collection authorities face a choice between recycling and landfill, not incineration.
