New food agency to have say on environmental issues

The Government's proposals for a new Food Standards Agency (FSA) were unveiled in a White Paper published on 14 January.1 The key reform will be the transfer of most food safety matters to the Agency, which will report to the Health Secretary. The Agency will have an important role in controlling contamination of food by chemicals and industrial releases, and in managing the risks posed by genetically modified organisms.
