Industry left uncertain about new groundwater rules

Draft regulations which would introduce new controls on discharges of dangerous substances to groundwater were issued for consultation by the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR) on 12 January.1 The new rules are a response to pressure from the European Commission for curbs on disposal of sheep dips to soakaways. But they also have the potential to affect many industrial activities - though the DETR has declined to spell out the implications itself at this stage.
