Wind industry looks to brighter future offshore

The UK's wind power industry, beset by problems in winning planning consent for land-based wind farms, is urging the Government to back the development of a major new offshore industry. As yet almost no offshore wind capacity exists anywhere in the world - but Denmark and the Netherlands have unveiled plans for large-scale installations in the North Sea and the Baltic. Major power companies are now considering similar projects in the UK which could make a large contribution towards the Government's renewable energy target. However, difficult issues surrounding the economics, consenting procedures and environmental impact of offshore schemes must first be addressed.
