UK to recover just 44% of packaging by 2001

The UK is likely to miss the statutory EC target to recover at least 50% of packaging waste by 2001 by six percentage points - a shortfall of almost 700,000 tonnes, according to the latest industry estimates. Only paper and steel of the five main materials look set to achieve 50%. Such an outcome could leave obligated companies in the packaging chain scrambling to acquire packaging recovery notes (PRNs) - the main form of evidence of compliance - which in turn could drive up PRN prices.
