Emphasis on voluntary action in sustainable business consultation

The Government appears intent on relying largely on voluntary action by businesses as their contribution to its forthcoming strategy on sustainable development. All sectors were invited to put forward ideas for voluntary agreements by a consultation paper on sustainable business issued in June - and the Government is hoping to have six agreements in place by the end of the year.1 Also under consideration are the best ways of promoting environmental reporting, uptake of environmental management systems and greening of products. A second paper has invited views on how improved resource efficiency could be encouraged in the construction sector.2
