Water industry passes 300 mark with pollution convictions

Convictions of water companies for water pollution offences topped the 300 mark since privatisation in 1997/98, with their total fines and costs approaching £1.5 million. The Environment Agency has called for higher fines to encourage them to improve their pollution record. Meanwhile, the Agency took fewer prosecutions for breaches of integrated pollution control and radioactive substances legislation last year, with average fines dropping to a three-year low.
