Industry ends research on toxic fluorine breakdown product

The fluorocarbons industry is to abandon research into environmental levels of trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), a breakdown product of some HCFCs and HFCs which is accumulating in some lakes and wetlands. The decision follows a risk assessment which concluded that the compounds are only minor contributors to TFA levels in the environment - but a massive gap remains in understanding of sources of the pollutant.
