Northern Ireland water legislation

The desperately slow process of aligning Northern Ireland's environmental legislation with the rest of the UK has been underlined once again by a consultation paper and draft Order to modernise the Province's water laws.1 These are currently governed by the 1972 Water Act. Updating proposals were published in late 1993 (ENDS Report 229, pp 33-34 ), but it has taken a further five years to prepare a draft Order.
