Mine abandonment rules for Scotland

Regulations setting out the information which mine operators must submit to the Scottish Environment Protection Agency before abandoning a mine came into effect in Scotland on 31 July. 1 The notification requirement was introduced by the Environment Act 1995 to allow time for arrangements to be made to prevent water pollution when mine dewatering ceases. Similar rules came into force in England and Wales in April (ENDS Report 279, pp 37-38 ).
