Austria bans phthalates in toddlers' toys

Austria has become the first EC country to ban the use of phthalates in toys for children under three. The PVC, phthalate and toy industries hope that agreement on a standard method for testing phthalate migration levels from toys, together with recently agreed migration levels, should reassure governments that curbs on phthalates are unnecessary - but Denmark and Sweden also have legislation in the pipeline.
