Sweet waters of Slough

Confectionery giant Mars was fined £7,000, with £1,000 costs, on 26 August after admitting polluting a Berkshire stream with effluent from its 'Skittles' sweet production area. Slough magistrates heard the stream was turned grey and cloudy and contained sewage fungus. An effluent discharge was traced through Mars' drainage system to a faulty pump.
