Chemical firms "buying time" on APE phase-out
Major manufacturers of alkyl phenol ethoxylate (APE) surfactants are "trying to buy time" by producing misleading scientific studies on the environmental profiles of their products, according to scientists at the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). Studies sponsored by major US and Japanese producers claim that the compounds are biodegradable, do not reach toxic levels in the environment and are not oestrogenic in laboratory tests.
