MPs slam Government over investment treaty muddle

The Government's performance in last year's abortive negotiations on the controversial Multilateral Agreement on Investment (MAI) has been strongly criticised in a report by the House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee.1 It says that the Government failed to pursue forcefully enough the integration of environmental and social concerns into the treaty, and questions whether the World Trade Organisation (WTO) - the Government's favoured home for future negotiations - is the correct forum.
