Lords examine cement firms' incineration ambitions

The cement industry's ambitions to use a growing range of waste streams as fuel and raw material came under scrutiny in the House of Lords in March during an inquiry on the draft EC Directive on incineration. The British Cement Association (BCA) said the EC proposal would prevent cement firms burning wastes at the many UK kilns which use the "wet" kiln process - but several of these plants will shortly be replaced with dry kilns which, given investment in abatement equipment, could meet the proposed standards.
