Passions stirred over fuel duty's impact on road hauliers

Much heat but little light were shed on the impact of the Budget increase in diesel duty on road hauliers in parliamentary debates during April. Ministers have dismissed Conservative claims that the increase will destroy tens of thousands of jobs and cause serious damage to the industry's competitiveness - and branded the Opposition's new policy to abandon the fuel duty escalator as cynical opportunism. But the row may persuade the Government to cut back future increases in fuel duty - as well as push it to accelerate a review of vehicle excise duty on lorries.
