Parliament seeks BAT requirement for EMAS-registered firms

A requirement on registered companies to use the best available techniques (BAT) was among the amendments demanded by the European Parliament in April to beef up the revision of the EC's eco-management and audit scheme (EMAS). The move is opposed by business groups which argue that it may deter firms from pursuing registration to the standard. Parliament sought to sweeten the pill with proposals to reduce the registration burden for smaller firms and giving registered companies preferential treatment when tendering for public contracts.
