Biodiversity, bees and free trade

The European Court of Justice has made it clear that the maintenance of local biodiversity can justify a Member State restricting imports and movements of animals which might interbreed with local species. The decision applies classically developed principles, but appears to be the first in which the Court has considered in detail the concept of biodiversity in the context of free trade.
