New Sellafield limits clear path for review

Revised discharge limits for the Sellafield nuclear reprocessing complex, approved by Ministers in November, will fail to prevent levels of technetium-99 in shellfish from exceeding EC safety thresholds. The Environment Agency is now starting work on a long overdue review of the site's radioactive discharges - but may stray into a legal and political minefield if it seeks to reopen arguments over the justification for reprocessing.
