US manufacturers attack NPE phase-out proposals

US manufacturers of nonyl phenol ethoxylate (NPE) surfactants have attacked EC proposals to limit environmental risks by banning uses of the compounds in industrial cleaning applications. The industry says that the EC's risk assessment is based on "totally unrealistic exposures" and points to "substantial differences" in the approach between European and US regulators. The objections came as the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR) made last-minute changes to its risk assessment for NPEs, relaxing proposed restrictions on pesticide products.
