Government, water companies may face new shake-up on river quality

The Government faces a challenge over implementation of the 1978 EC Directive on water quality standards for freshwater fish which could end in water companies being required to make substantial investments to improve their sewage effluent discharges. The challenge follows an earlier one over implementation of the 1979 Directive on shellfish waters which resulted in a £60 million bill for the industry.
