US dioxin review heightens health concerns
The health risks posed by dioxins are greater than previously estimated, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has concluded in the latest draft of its long-running review. 1 Compared with its earlier estimates, the EPA believes that cancer risks may be ten times higher, while the safety margins for non-cancer effects are more slender or non-existent. The findings are in sharp contrast to the UK Department of Health's conservative assessment of dioxin risks, which appears overdue for revision.
