Scottish sewage requirements tightened

The Scottish Executive has revoked the "less sensitive area" (LSA) status of nine coastal areas under the 1991 EC Directive on urban wastewater treatment. The move will mean that secondary sewage treatment will now be required in these areas for coastal sewage discharges serving populations in excess of 10,000 people or for estuarine discharges serving more than 2,000.
