Greenpeace challenges "green grocer" on CFC substitutes

Sainsbury's has been made the target of a new Greenpeace campaign against the use of fluorocarbons as CFC substitutes in retail refrigeration applications. Hotly contested technical issues have been raised by the group's claim that ammonia is an acceptable substitute. The campaign is of critical importance to fluorocarbon producers such as ICI and Du Pont who fear that it may erode projected sales of CFC substitutes in which they have invested heavily.
