Role of public opinion in decisions on GM crops still unclear

The Government has promised to support a public debate to inform decisions due next year on whether and on what terms to allow the commercialisation of genetically modified crops. But its response to the first report of the Agriculture and Environment Biotechnology Commission (AEBC) suggests that it sees little room for manoeuvre under EU legislation to base those decisions on anything other than conventional considerations of risk.1
