Energy efficiency threatened by new TVs

Eleven of the twelve EC Member States are ready to support a £690 million plan to kick-start the development of high definition television (HDTV). But environmentalists claim that the energy consumption of HDTV sets will be five times that of conventional televisions - and that if the technology comes to dominate the market it could cancel out the benefits of the EC's energy efficiency programme.
