UK likely to oppose new SO2 limit for boilers

Sulphur emission limits for medium-sized new combustion plant have been proposed by the European Commission.1 They are likely to be opposed by the UK on the grounds that much British coal contains so much sulphur that it could not be burned in such boilers without desulphurisation equipment, and because of the precedent they may set for future EC controls on large and small boilers.
